And assignment submission date is coming. My assignments are more or less completed. Yes they look a little like rushed work but they’re completed. I had this crazy obsession with formatting in Word 2007. And that of course is the reason why I can’t move away from Word. Whoever tell me Open Office is cool apparently does not work on numbered document listings and table of contents much. So please save your voices, Office Word 2007 rocks for me and I will not convert at this point of time.

Looking like Word does not mean it is Word.

Today going to university seemed to be a norm. Every parent wants their child to be academically successful. Have you given a thought that we, perhaps, don’t need too many university undergraduates? And that perhaps diplomas students are more than enough?

Suppose Singapore only needs 0.1% to have Masters, 10% to have Bachelors. But the population has this desire to push themselves to a university. In the end there’s just not much people with the diplomas, not much people willing to do the more labor-intensive work.

The solution is to bring foreign workers into Singapore.

So why are people complaining about foreign workers in Singapore? They are here because we have this perception that a university degree is most essential.

Getting a university degree to maintain competitiveness? Nah, that’s probably a misconception. Getting university degree simply increase competitiveness amongst the degree holders.

After I drew the ER diagram on the white board in the database lesson, the lecturer commented that I am a programmer.

Lecturer: You have an Diploma in IT right?
Me: No, biotechnology.
Lecturer: I know you’re a programmer.

Yeah yeah… I hate being called a programmer. I somehow prefer to be called a developer. (By the way, I like the way Indians pronounce ‘developer’.) It’s just that programmer sounds like a menial task and developer sounds much nicer.

It’s just like lecturers preferring to be known as lecturers as opposed to being called ‘teachers’.

Just my 0.02 dollars.

That’s my school (Singapore Institute of Management), my distant school (University of London) and my degree (Computing and Information System).

I just saw my results are I passed.

And I passed.

This interestingly titled 19-minute short film discusses how best to deliver lessons to students. It also includes a forward by Professor John Biggs.

Teaching teaching and understanding understanding

I think there’re many things teachers can learn about teaching in this video material. Most lecturers in my university should, perhaps, take a look at this video.

I think I may have to relearn learning too. Good points.
