There’s new development to the Honduras political situation:
Honduran Congress names provisional president
Hours after the sitting president was deposed by a military-led coup, a new president of Honduras was sworn in Sunday.
But the former president was not ready to give up his powers.
The political developments that swept Honduras over the past weeks and led up to Sunday’s coup had the makings of a crisis, but the situation in the Central American nation of 8 million people was calm.
Roberto Micheletti was sworn in as provisional president to the applause of members of Congress, who chanted, “Honduras! Honduras!” Outside the building, supporters of ousted President Jose Manuel Zelaya protested, but their numbers were limited, and the streets remained mostly peaceful. Micheletti told CNN en Español Sunday evening that he has imposed an “indefinite” curfew. (Source: CNN)
Also after reading much of the English comments here, I got a better picture and it appeared that the people are generally in favor of President Zelaya being removed.
I totally agree on this one. The whole idea of the ban’s rather silly anyway. I don’t consider stem cells human apparently.
Obama Wants Congress To Act On Lifting Stem Cells Ban
Obama, who favors medical research on stem cells derived from human embryos, told CNN he was still exploring an executive order to revoke Bush’s ban.
“But I like the idea of the American people’s representatives expressing their views on an issue like this,” he said, lauding a “bipartisan” consensus in Congress that such research is ethical and potentially life-saving.
If the research could yield hope for victims of degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, “I think that sends a powerful message,” he said.
In blocking federal funding for stem cell research, Bush sided with religious conservatives who argue that research on embryos destroys human life, albeit at its earliest stage of development.
Stem cells are primitive cells from early-stage embryos capable of developing into almost every tissue of the body.
Scientists believe they could prove key in finding a cure for a number of serious diseases, including also diabetes and cancer. (Source: Physorg)
USA probably lacks behind in biosciences just because of this ban.
Well if the banking industry gets it, why not the porn industry?
Porn Kings to D.C. – Help Us Through Hard Times
Joe Francis and Larry Flynt claim the economy has made America’s sexual appetite go limp, so they’re going to the one place where sex is always rampant — Congress.
Flynt (the “Hustler” guy) and Francis (the “Girls Gone Wild” dude) are asking the government for a $5 billion bailout, claiming the adult entertainment industry has taken a huge shot to the face because of the downturn — citing the fact that XXX DVD sales are down 22% from a year ago.
“With all this economic misery and people losing all that money, sex is the farthest thing from their mind,” Flynt says. “It’s time for Congress to rejuvenate the sexual appetite of America.”
Francis sees his industry like the big three automakers, only BIGGER: “Congress seems willing to help shore up our nation’s most important businesses; we feel we deserve the same consideration.”
Francis says he’s going to D.C. to personally make the pitch. Sounds like someone has a bone to pick. (Source: TMZ)
Of course I’m not suggesting you should bail out the porn industry. But seriously too much money has been poured to the bailout so US$5b for the porn industry? Perhaps this isn’t that significant after all
