Moved to Rackspace Cloud

A couple of days ago, I encountered a database corruption. One sentence: My access log grew so huge it took up 100% of the disk space; MySQL can no longer write the database files and a few tables got corrupted.

Okay I cheated on the one sentence.

Rackspace Cloud has similar build as Slicehost (my previous host). I moved a few of my blogs over. Currently Slicehost is like an expensive DNS server. That said, Rackspace Cloud is cheaper than Slicehost. Slicehost is a subsidiary of Rackspace. Well anyway, if you do like to use Rackspace and would like to make my day, use my referrer code ‘REF-KW’ without quotations. It gives me some rebate, I think.

Search engines sent 67.95% of the visitors. Asides search engines, most of the visitors come from Twitter, Ping.sg, Facebook and Stackoverflow.

Firefox is a favorite browser with 60%. Chrome visits constitutes 5% which I am responsible for at least half of Chrome visits I presume.

The top searches are XAMPP, jQuery, Django and PostgreSQL related. I code using CakePHP but no one reads my CakePHP stuff. My top tags are NetBeans, XAMPP and Sex, the combination upsets me.

Top countries visiting are US, UK, Singapore, India and Canada. I had a visitor from Zimbabwe, I didn’t know they can afford computers. Zimbabwe, a victim of hyper inflation, announced last February the removal of 12 zeroes from the currency, i.e. 1,000,000,000,000 Zimbabwe dollars being exchanged for 1 new dollar.

This is a Japanese horror film so be warned. Film is gory.

Suicide Club, known in Japan as Suicide Circle (自殺サークル ,Jisatsu Sākuru?) is a 2002 Japanese independent film and part of a trilogy that gained a considerable amount of notoriety in film festivals around the world for its controversial subject matter and gory presentation, and has since developed a significant cult following. It won the Jury Prize for “Most Ground-Breaking Film” at the Fantasia Film Festival. The movie was written and directed by Sion Sono. And know I have to think what am I going to do with it. They are initials for my name Kah Wee. Currently it redirects to this blog.

I probably make it into a tinyurl-like service or something. This is a rather unnecessary expense actually. I kinda regret spending 60 on something I probably won’t put any thing useful on. But oh well what’s done is done.

Things got really bad with Media Temple

The slowness in speed is almost unbearable. I couldn’t access most of the time. I got so sick that I stopped blogging on my other blog. I finally decided I had enough. I sat in front of my computer for 2 hours painstakingly backing things up. There are just so many things to migrate over to the new host. But it just had to be done.

Yesterday my ad provider complained that I fail to put up the links to the advertisements. I checked and found out really it’s just not there. In fact my whole front page is not there. That’s just great, I wanted to troubleshoot it only to realized it’s just too slow to even SSH in to the server. I will stop paying Media Temple. I still have credits there but I’ll just let them have the money.

I migrated to Slicehost (visit with my referrer link). During May, I plan to up the Slicehost account to 512 MB RAM. I don’t think I’ll ever return to Media Temple. It’s got a nice homepage but it’s got just a nice homepage. I was using their Grid Service to host one blog.

I just want to say that I feel a little sense of achievement after knowing that there are at least 1000 tags with more than 2 posts in it. Previously I had so many tags with just one post in them. This makes me a little happier and I don’t know why. You can view my archives here.

I am beginning to believe that 256 MB of RAM is insufficient for running a couple of blogs. It manages to run 2 months before something occurs. I’m fine with this failure rate I guess. But I never dared to run things other than PHP stuff. I think I would consider an upgrade in 6 months.

A welcome notice to spammers

I’m a little happy, a little sad too. Basically this blog has the first stream of spam. Now I have 2 spammers per day, previously it was 0. (Then again, the only one blogging and commenting probably is just me so an improvement I guess.) I felt rather encouraged having to log in spotting spam; reason being that it is getting a little popular than last month.

I have a dream that one day this blog will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. I have a dream that my little children will one day read a blog where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

Okay that was just slotting “blog” to the speech by Martin Luther King, Jr..
