Yeah, funny commercial. Completely makes you forget Microsoft’s sinister “Embrace, extend, extinguish” motto. But still–I can’t HELP but like the commercial. I wrote about my inner turmoil with respect to this on my own blog recently, at http://jennamcwilliams.blogspot.com/2009/03/i-hate-microsoft-but-i-kinda-like-its.html. I’d love for you to check it out!
Jenna: Lots of companies do that to standards, they embrace then differentiate to achieve a competitive edge. SQL is a great example here, they have a standard and every vendor extends it. It turns out that standards are rather weakly defined in the first place and only the law of the region and significant consumer pressure can force adherence to the standard.
That said, I’m a little sitting on the fence when it comes to judging Microsoft. I always felt that it’s just the way some companies work and grow. It’s really nothing new. The company can improve on many aspects and often disappoints me with their practices but they lead the industry in more ways than you can imagine. I just thought at their position, they could have done more.
