Roberto Micheletti sworn in as Honduras provisional president

There’s new development to the Honduras political situation:

Manuel Zelaya
Manuel Zelaya

Honduran Congress names provisional president

Hours after the sitting president was deposed by a military-led coup, a new president of Honduras was sworn in Sunday.

But the former president was not ready to give up his powers.

The political developments that swept Honduras over the past weeks and led up to Sunday’s coup had the makings of a crisis, but the situation in the Central American nation of 8 million people was calm.

Roberto Micheletti was sworn in as provisional president to the applause of members of Congress, who chanted, “Honduras! Honduras!” Outside the building, supporters of ousted President Jose Manuel Zelaya protested, but their numbers were limited, and the streets remained mostly peaceful. Micheletti told CNN en Español Sunday evening that he has imposed an “indefinite” curfew. (Source: CNN)

Also after reading much of the English comments here, I got a better picture and it appeared that the people are generally in favor of President Zelaya being removed.

  1. You’re right….us hondurans are happy this happened. This person was leading our country towards a situation where he would eventually attain unlimited powers by dissolving the Honduras Congress to install a new one of his choice in order to create a new Constitution that would allow him to do ANYTHING he wanted. You do not need to be a political analist to undertands this, every honduran witnessed how Zelaya praised Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez with whom he has a very close relation. Zelaya was the most recent to join the list of pawns of Hugo Chavez throughout Latin America. Now we are very concerned about the statement Chavez made about doing anything neccesary to bring Zelaya back.

  2. We are most grateful that he was removed from his position. He was dragging Honduras into a disaster that would talk much time to overcome. During his presidency crime rates and job loss went higher. All of the work done by preceding president Ricardo Maduro went in vane when Mel assumed presidency. It is a shame that most international media only favor Mel’s point of view and not the point of view of the country’s citizen. Mel is lying to external governments making himself the victim so that they can reinstate him as president and continue his (Chavez) plans.

  3. CNN has been reporting through a biased eye. The situation in Honduras, has not been presented as should by some media. Hondurans are thankful for the action taken by the military forces. Mel Zelaya wanted to go above the law. He wanted to do things his way, and change the constitution. He did not respect the congress, or the people. He did not hear opinions, and he was taking advantage of the ignorance of others. Zelaya was a president who was acting as told by other communist leaders, who have sank their countries into an asphyxiating rule in order to have infinite power. This should not be allowed and we are happy that us Honduras have served as an example , fighting for our freedom that wants to be taken away by such president.

  4. Mr Zelaya was not removed from government because he was “just askindg the people a question”. He was removed because he wanted to dissolve the Congress and create a new constitution. This move would have allowed him to remain in power for an indefinite period of time.
This process mirrors what Hugo Chavez (Zelaya’s mentor) has done in Venezuela.
Zelaya had chosen to disobey the other branches of government and was acting constantly above the law.
I do not like how Zelaya was removed from office, but I believe it was necessary.

  5. Zelaya, despite the court let him know that through his initiative, which was not just a question but a direct attempt to nullify our current constitution, he was committing an illegal act, ignored them and decided to continue with it. Specifically Zelaya violated article 375 which states that any attempt to nullify the current Constitution is to be declared as “treason to our country”. Based on article 321, 322, 323, and 324 which detail the actions to be taken with public servers who violate our laws, Zelaya was deposed, arrested and ousted from Honduras.

This has not been by any means a coup. This has been the implementation of our laws, and the succession by Micheletti the mechanismo of our Constitution.

    Por guardar ese emblema divino
    marcharemos Oh patria a la muerte;
    generosa será nuestra suerte
si morimos pensando en tu amor.
    Defendiendo tu santa bandera,
y en tus pliegues gloriosos cubiertos,
    serán muchos, Honduras, tus muertos,
    pero todos caerán con honor.
    ATENTAMENTE JUVENTUD HONDUREÑA, PUEBLO HONDUREÑO.

  9. Shut up stan. You dont live in
honduras and don’t know how bad this president was. This is not a Coup as all powers of state, legislative, judicial and executive are still there. Only zelaya was impeached.

We Honduras hate communism and he was leading our country to become another cuba/venezuela. you sit there comfortable in Vancouver you have no knowledge the suffering this man was causing. The only people that supported him were either communist, payed or forced to support them.

    Good Riddance!

  10. if zelaya had his way he would have dissolved congress and our consitution and then he would be making a coup de tat. And where would be the civil liberties of all the people then? He would reign supreme and make us a cuba. F him. If we have to endure criticism from the international community for their lack of knowledge so be it. When we have elections in November all will return to normal. To hell with Communism. To hell with Chavez!
