Singapore lost but can still sing Chinese anthem
Singapore lost, it was a good match considering that it sort of lasted quite long. Comparatively to Hong Kong’s match, it is already very good. Singapore’s table tennis team got a silver this time. This is also the first medal awarded to Singapore since our independence.
It’s a good year after all. This could well increase Olympics awareness in Singapore. It’s a little unfortunate that the table tennis team did not comprise of – ahem – too many Singapore natives. At least I can see Li Jiawei singing the Chinese national anthem too.
I guess that ends our Beijing Olympics quest for medals. I look forward to four years later.
[Note: If I could, I would have bury this post as inaccurate. It spreads around some friends and a couple of us picked it up and thought it was true.]

I think the winning of the medal will set the trend of employing more foreign talents to represent Singapore in the next Olympics game.

Well, if you look at it this way. I saw Jiawei and Yuegu smiling and giggling when they are competing with their China counterparts. I don’t see the seriousness and “want” to win the gold medal. Whereas, Tianwei was seriously trying to outdo the World No 5 Wang Nan. You can’t say the same for Jiawei and Yuegu who were happy making silly mistakes and giving unnecessary points to their opponents. It is all written in the stars. Can you blame the two girls for being that way? Nope, it is their home afterall – Beijing, China is where they come from. No amount of administrative work and a card that says “Singaporean” can dispel that fact. Let alone money from all their winnings. But good try. If only the prize is more attractive, maybe they would want to win… badly.
